Man Dies After Fall From Looking Glass - Brevard NC

A South Carolina man died after falling more than 400 feet Saturday from the top of Looking Glass Rock in Pisgah National Forest.

The body of Harold Wiggins, 68, of Lexington, S.C., was found by a hiker at about 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, according to Transylvania Rescue Squad Assistant Chief Brian Kreigsman.

"(Wiggins) apparently fell," Kreigsman said. "We don't know why he fell."

He added that rescuers were notified by the man's wife and son, who'd been on the hike with him to the top, the man was missing from the group. A group of rescuers went to the top of Looking Glass Rock on Saturday evening in an attempt to locate the man. A search was postponed due to lack of sunlight and impending weather at about 3:30 a.m.

Little River, North Transylvania and Rosman firefighters assisted in the search and recovery. U.S. Forest Service and Transylvania County Sheriff's department were also on scene during the investigation.

Rescuers used an ATV the next day when a hiker located the man's body at the base of the rock. Kreigsman said it's very rare for someone to fall from the top of the rock but still urged caution to hikers.

"You have to use caution," Kreigsman said.
