Social Security Works

Why, do you suppose, are Republicans trying to raise the retirement age yet further for Social Security? What do they have against working folks? Maybe we desk-bound types can handle working longer, but if you do manual work age is working against you.

Paul Krugman, in a recent column, suggests the reason is that Social Security is evidence that government does do something really useful, contrary to the usual right wing beliefs. All the Republican candidates for president seem to have this anti-government attitude. Who dislikes Social Security? Or Medicare? Krugman suggests it is the wealthy “1%”ers, and that Republican candidates are beholden to them for financial support.

Sure doesn’t sound like a winning strategy to me, nor a humane one either.
