Child Found; Father Arrested-Brevard NC

The 4-year-old daughter of a suspect and victim in an alleged assault case in Brevard was found safe early Wednesday evening after several amber alerts were issued.

The 4-year-old was located in Buncombe County, according to Brevard Police Chief Phil Harris, and the father was taken into police custody and charged with felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious bodily injury.

"We did locate both the child and the suspect," said Harris.

Police say Derrick Whiteside, 49, of Brevard, assaulted a female victim Wednesday with a blunt instrument at a Brevard residence, resulting in serious injury to the victim. Police also said the female victim and Whiteside were parents of the 4-year-old but did not say if the two were in a relationship.

Whiteside fled the scene with his daughter, causing several amber alerts to be issued on Wednesday evening. The victim was taken to Mission Hospital with serious injuries to her body and head. Harris said Thursday morning the victim appeared to be doing better and was talking with Brevard Police investigators.

Emergency responders at the scene said the woman was hit in the head and face with a baseball bat, causing fractures to her hands and serious trauma to her head.

The Transylvania County Department of Social Services is making arrangements for the 4-year-old while her mother recovers in the hospital. Police did not consider the incident with the child an abduction, because Whiteside is the child's father, but were concerned about the child's well being because of Whiteside's state of mind after leaving the alleged scene of the crime.
