The Transylvania Times -

Opposes Rails To Trails

This letter is in response to Colleen Murphy’s letter in support of Rails to Trails. Although there are many in support of it, there are also many against the conversion, albeit much less vocally. I am strongly against it and don’t really care if a train runs on it again, although Oskar Blues could replace their daily trolley to Asheville with a passenger train.

No, leave the tracks as is. If the scenery between Brevard and Hendersonville would not be worth paying train fare to see, why would one want to ride their bicycle to see it.

Let’s spend our money more wisely. If you live in or come to Transylvania County to ride your bicycle or exercise and can’t find a place to go, you are not looking very hard. Thousands come here annually for bicycling now. I don’t see another trail bringing in new people and new business to the county, only the same people with one more trail to ride on.

I have an idea to bring in a different crowd of people to the area. Let’s get a first class public outdoor shooting range built on the land the state is purchasing from Charles Taylor or on an “out of the way corner” at DuPont. We could have people from all over the Southeast. Most of us pay our fair share in taxes, but not all of us are bicycle enthusiasts.
