The Transylvania Times -

Ecusta Trail Is Best Bet

A couple of weekends ago, I had the pleasure of riding a bicycle on the Creeper Trail in Damascus, Va., a Rails-to-Trails bike path. We had a total of 17 people in our group. We spent two nights in cabins, rented some bikes and ate several meals in Damascus.

A trail ranger told me that there were approximately 1,200 people riding the trail the day we were there and another 700-800 expected the following day. Many had to find a place to eat, sleep, buy gas and rent bikes.

Brevard and Transyl-vania County are already well known for Biking. The Ecusta Trail represents a further opportunity to increase its presence in that business and to create new jobs for motels, restaurants, and bike shops, as well as other downtown businesses.

I realize there is a belief by some that there might be an opportunity at some point in the future to attract an industry to Transylvania County that will utilize the rail right-of-way to Hendersonville. That may be, but I suspect such a project has a low probability of success and would be quite some time off in the future at best.

On the other hand, proceeding with the development of the Ecusta Trail now has a higher probability of success in creating jobs and businesses by utilizing the inherent strengths of Brevard and Transylvania County.
