Learn Self-Defense With SAFE – Brevard NC

In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, SAFE, Inc. is hosting two self-defense classes in October. The classes will discuss awareness as a first line of defense, as well as the mental aspects of self-defense.

The classes will also feature hands-on training based on Brazilian jiu jitsu. Participants will learn grip breaking, es-capes from the bottom position, choke defense, joint locks and how to apply chokes.

Said SAFE director of Prevention Services Susan Huter, “We’re very excited to be partnering with local law enforcement for these classes. I know I’m looking forward to learning how to protect myself and become more aware of my surroundings. Plus, it sounds like fun!”

The classes will be held Saturday, Oct. 10 and Saturday, Oct. 17. Both classes will run from 9-11 a.m. and will take place at the Community Services Building at 106 E. Morgan St. in Brevard. There is a one-time fee of $20, which includes both sessions. Registration is required. To reserve a space, call Huter at 885-7233.

Participants are urged to wear comfortable clothing that they can move in. People may sit out any exercises that they don’t feel comfortable with.

“This is all about empowering people, giving them the information and skills they need to make choices. We hope everyone who’s interested will come out and have an enjoyable and informative time,” said Huter.
