Hemlock Depletion Having An Impact - Brevard NC

The loss of hemlock trees because of the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) is having an impact on local rivers and aquatic species.

Members of the Transylvania Natural Resources Council (TNRC) were informed of this at their monthly meeting last Friday.

French Broad Riverkeeper Hartwell Carson said hemlocks provide a great deal of stability along the banks of the French Broad River. However, when they die or become weakened, they fall into the water and obstruct the current.

Carson also said that hemlocks drink a lot of water in the winter while hardwoods drink a lot of water in the summer....
