Ask Us: N.C. 280 U.S. 64 Connector

What is the latest on the proposed new connector road between the Asheville Highway and the New Hendersonville Highway (U.S. 64)?

According to the N.C. Department of Transportation, bids are currently scheduled to be sought from contractors in February, with actual construction to begin some time in the spring, though things are subject to change.

As currently planned, the four-lane road would have a nexus just past the Ecusta Credit Union on Asheville Highway and just past the One Stop III store on Old Hendersonville Highway. The road would go through the Davidson River Village property (the former Ecusta site). The road would run approximately eight-tenths of a mile. The road’s trajectory also intersects with Ecusta Road, where a new roundabout would be constructed. The road has been designed to resemble a boulevard, with wide medians, bike areas, as well as curb, gutter and landscaping amenities. As of last year, the total cost of the project was estimated at $10.9 million.

Who placed the tables and chairs in the alley on East Main Street in Brevard?

“The city purchased the tables and chairs that were recently placed in the South Alley,” said Planning Director Daniel Cobb. “They are available for use and enjoyment of the general public. There is a small ‘B’ for Brevard cutout of the backs of the chairs to denote they are public property.”

Why has the Transylvania County Transportation System stopped providing services to Lake Toxaway?

County Manager Jaime Laughter provided the following response: “We cancelled the Lake Toxaway route in late December that we advertised and operated for on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. Since August, we had one client ride twice. The expense of having a vehicle on hold in case someone signed up and a driver on call outweighed the demand that we had after advertising and promoting the service in that area of the county. I believe the rider we had only rode those two times early in the offering.”
