A Mills River man is accused of attempting to steal jewelry from Kmart in Brevard.
Donald Alan Skelton, 34, of 172 Maple Hill Circle, was charged with felony larceny by attempting to remove an anti-theft device on Jan. 6.
According to court documents, Skelton removed more than $1,000 worth of jewelry from a display in the Kmart store on Asheville Highway after removing it from a counter.
The document said Skelton “unlawfully, willfully and feloniously did remove a jewelry display by cutting an anti-theft device, freeing the display from the jewelry counter.
The defendant then removed $1,001.20 worth of jewelry from the device.
Brevard police officers responded to the call and made the arrest.
Skelton was taken to Transylvania County Detention Center, where he was later released after posting an undisclosed amount of bail.
Skelton had also written the court from jail, stating the “charges were hanging over his head,” and also saying, “I am in the process of receiving my GED, and am up for a promotion to honor grade, whereby I can earn money to support my family and be a productive citizen upon release.”
