Donald "Don" Herrman


Donald “Don” Herrman’s mortal life transitioned Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2016, peacefully at home.

He was born March 15, 1927 to Bonnie Hoadley and Alvin Wesley Herr-man. He grew up in Bloomington, Ind.

He was a World War II veteran serving in the Army of Occupation stationed in Germany. After being discharged from the Army he served in the Air Force.

He graduated from the University School with Honors and from Indiana University School of Business with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Business.

While enrolled in IU, he was invited and become a member of the Theta Chi Fraternity. There he met and married the first love of his life, Katherine Elizabeth Shaffer. Katherine “Kay” died March 8, 1996 at their mountain home.

Influenced by Nan Morrow, Don and Kay joined the Western Carolina Botanical Club. He served as president of the club for five and a half years.

He is survived by the second love of his life, Dana Braddy Herrman. They were married May 29, 1999, by Rob Field, Rector of St. Philip’s Parish in Brevard; two sons, William Herrman, of Mt. Dora, Fla. and Bradley Herrman and his wife, Sharon, of Cary, N.C., who birthed a grandson, Adam Herrman, who now resides in Norwood, N.C.

He served as senior warden of Emmanuel Episcopal Church and Christ the King Episcopal Church in Orlando, Fla., and has been a faithful member of St. Philip’s Parish since establishing residence in Transylvania County in 1988, serving as usher for many years.

His burial will be at St. Paul’s in the Valley prior to a memorial service.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016, at St. Philip’s at 2 p.m.

The family will receive guests immediately after the service in Miller Hall adjoining the sanctuary.
