BRCHS Grant To Treat Substance Abuse – Brevard NC

Blue Ridge Community Health Services (BRCHS) has been awarded more than $350,000 in Affordable Care Act funding to improve and expand delivery of substance abuse services in Western North Carolina, with a specific focus on treatment of opioid use disorders among the region’s most underserved populations.

Substance abuse is one of the most serious behavioral health issues among the population served by BRCHS, with misuse of alcohol and opioids frequently reported by medical providers. According to the North Carolina Institute of Medicine Substance Abuse Taskforce, 5.5 percent of North Carolina residents report being addicted to alcohol, drugs or both. By applying this rate to the total population in the BRCHS service area, it is estimated there are 25,365 individuals with addiction issues in the region.

This new funding will allow for further integration of behavioral health into the primary care setting. Substance abuse counselors will coordinate services necessary for patients to achieve and sustain recovery, including individual counseling and medication-assisted treatment. With this award, BRCHS projects that they will provide over 10,000 screenings across the region and increase their clinical capacity for providing substance abuse services for 1,000 individuals over the next year.

“We care for some of the most medically vulnerable and at-risk individuals in our region, and see first-hand how opioid abuse is negatively impacting our patients and their families,” said Dr. Richard Hudspeth, chief medical officer for BRCHS. “This new funding will allow us to provide care for those most in need.”

BRCHS is a nonprofit community health center that has been providing high quality and affordable medical, dental and mental health care, as well as promoting health awareness/education for more than 50 years.
