In the Nebraska prairie, far from the forests of his native New York, J. Sterling Morton launched the first Arbor Day in 1872. Soon, over a million trees had been planted as wind breaks to protect farmland and in town centers to create those shady and lovely squares with the tall elms and oaks we still admire today.
We continue to honor Arbor Day with symbolic tree plantings each year in communities large and small all across the country. The tradition continues in Brevard, which has been in the National Arbor Day Foundation’s list of Tree Cities USA for nearly four decades. As we app...
