Men Named In Fatal Accident At Waterfall - Brevard NC

Officials have released the names of the two men who died after falling from Raven Rock waterfall in Lake Toxaway last Tuesday.

According to Transylvania County Chief Deputy Eddie Gunter, Davis Zinsenheim, 22, and Joseph H. Hopkins, 23, both of Marietta, Ga., died after falling from the waterfall on May 10.

Lt. Terry Crowe, with the Lake Toxaway Fire Department, said the two men were on top of the waterfall when one of them fell about 50 feet onto a ledge, severely injuring himself. The other man attempted to climb down to him and fell 150 feet to his death.

“It was a sudden impact at the bottom,” Crowe said.

Gunter confirmed that Hopkins was the first to fall, getting hung up on a ledge. When Zinsenheim attempted to climb down to save him, he fell to his death. Hopkins was alive when emergency personnel arrived.

Crowe said emergency responders had difficulty rescuing Hopkins. Firefighters had to use a 100-foot ladder extended from a truck to get to his location. He was then placed in a basket used for rescue and put on the ladder and taken down off the cliff.

Crowe said Med-Trans helicopter transported Hopkins to Greenville Regional Hospital and he was pronounced dead the next morning.

Zinsenheim’s body was not visible and it took responders some time to locate it.

Crowe urged people to respect the danger of waterfalls.

“Waterfalls are beautiful but they are extremely dangerous,” he said.
