The Hollingsworth Gallery will host a special two-part exhibition to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Rise & Shine after school program, from May 26 through the end of June.

Part 1 of the exhibition is called "Faces" and features a dozen portraits of Rise & Shine students by Brevard photographer Dr. John Allen.

"There's nothing like the wonderful challenge of trying to convey the joy, excitement, and sheer energy of these children," said Allen. "It's deeply gratifying to have the opportunity to witness and capture their tremendous zest for life, their silliness, their obvious love for each other, and their moments of quiet reflection."

Unlike studio photographers, Allen specializes in taking candid portraits using available light, so that the children, families, musicians, and pets he photographs all feel at ease in their natural surroundings. In addition to working with Rise & Shine, he also is a volunteer photographer for the Brevard Music Center during the summer months.

Part 2 of the 20th anniversary exhibition features studies in photography created by five middle school scholars in the Rise & Shine program.

With instruction by volunteers Terry Jednaszewski and Don Lander, these youngsters took dozens of photographs of diverse subjects. They enjoyed learning the basics of photography and using higher-end digital cameras for their photo shoots at local destinations.

The exhibition will be part of Brevard's 4th Friday Gallery Walk during both May and June. The Hollingsworth Gallery is in the building that houses Main Street Limited and Quotations, at 147 E. Main Street. It is open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The photographs will be on display from May 26 through June 30.
