May B. Thorson

May B. Thorson, of Eustis, Fla. and Sapphire, went to be with the Lord Mother's Day, May 8, 2016.

She was born in Drummon Township Wisconsin Dec. 4, 1919. Her parents, Clarence and Mable McCann, and her beloved husband, Sam Thorson, preceded her in death. They were married 52 years before his death October 1991.

She is survived by her children, Jearold S. (Cathy), of Sorrento, Fla., Ronald W. (Sue), of Franklin, N.C. and Sandra Sneed Ouellette (Claude), of Eustis; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter and another on the way.

She and her husband moved their family from Wisconsin to Sarasota, Fla. in 1950 where they were very active in the Eagles Club, Boys and Girls 4-H, Brownies, Girls Scouts, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. They moved to North Carolina in 1976 and spent 40 years in the mountains they loved.

She was a founding and charter member of the Transylvania County Handcrafters Guild. She was a very active member of the Sapphire/Whitewater Community Center, the Lake Toxaway Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary and the Transylvania County Democratic Party. She was known as the "Pie Lady" and she taught basket making classes for many years in the area.

At the age of 90 she wrote the story of her life, "Amazing May, A Country Girl's Story," and was awarded first place from the North Carolina Society of Historians for the book.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Friends for Life Forever Farm, P.O. Box 340, Sapphire, NC 28774.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 28, 2016, at 11 a.m. at the Lake Toxaway Baptist Church.

Forever Friends for Life Animal Home was one of May's favorite charities.
