Help Schenck Help Students

On May 9, I was delighted to attend the Community Relations Council dinner at Schenck Job Corps. The delicious dinner, consisting of fried chicken and steak filets and all the fixings, was cooked by Schenck’s culinary arts students.

After dinner, Don DeBiase from WSQL radio hosted the presentation of certificates of appreciation to 20 Job Corps students. DeBiase also asked the students about their career plans. Schenck Job Corps is committed to the mission of educating its students to have marketable skills for the rest of their lives.

The dinner made me want to resume tutoring, a voluntary activity I had to postpone due to health issues. Spirit restored, I now have the energy to tutor again.

In the meantime, if readers are interested in tutoring, they should consult Whit McNeill, tutor coordinator. The main phone number for Schenck is 862-6100.

If readers are interested in serving on the Community Relations Council, they should contact Sonya Holmes at 862-6103. The council is a body of community members from all walks of life who serve as supportive advocates for Schenck students. Some members from the business world even offer students employment. The council meets once a month in the main dining hall on campus.

Folks who are keen on making a difference in the lives of young people will find involvement with Schenck Job Corps to be a pathway to advocacy and a better world.
