School Board Upset

Members of the Transylvania County Board of Education expressed frustration Monday night over a new state law that mandates merit-based bonuses be given to non-educators during the 2016-17 school year.

The law, however, prohibits across-the-board bonuses and calls for each educational entity to establish the criteria for determining bonuses.

“On the surface, it sounds wonderful,” said Superintendent Jeff McDaris of the law.

But he noted the legislation and its implementation is rife with problems.
