Students from Brevard and Rosman high schools competed in a number of competitions during the recent Mountain State Fair.

Brevard High's Selina Brown and Abigail Gant competed in the Dairy Steer project, with Gant winning her market steer class.

Daniel Toole and Jacob Smith competed in the truck driving and tractor career development event.

Both had to maneuver through an obstacle course with a truck or tractor to demonstrate safety and driving skills.

Smith won the FFA Western federation division, which secured him a spot to compete at the state level later this year.

Brevard High School students Dan Harris, Lilly Harris, Selina Brown, Anna Bryson, Kaylee Cope, Jacob Fulp and David Howell competed in the market classification in pig showing.

In other competitions, Lily Harris showed her Brown Swiss heifer, Jade, and Hannah Lemel showed a jersey heifer sponsored by Mike Corn. Both students walked away with several championships and reserve championships in showmanship and dairy breed classes.

Cheyenne Rathbone and Abigail Gant showed the market broiler chickens they had raised for six weeks through a program that assists Manna Food Bank.

Rosman FFA students Rachel Head and Nicole Whitmire had their Holstein steers take part in WNC Dairy steer project. The students bought week-old dairy bull calves in March 2016, bottle raised and grew them out. The students attended two clinics where they dehorned, castrated, vaccinated, dewormed and learned how to show their cattle. The steers were auctioned at the conclusion of the Mountain State Fair.

As well as high-school students, 6-year-old Rosman Elementary student Ella Grace McNeely took part in the fair, showing her crossbred pig that weighed 273 pounds and her market broiler chickens.
