Officials: Season Increases Danger Of Fires – Transylvania Times NC

October 10, 2016

A combination of Hurricane Matthew and drought season will dry out fine fuels and increase fire danger this week, according to local N.C. Forest Service officials.

Transylvania County’s Forest Service Ranger Frank Rogers said late last week the winds coming from the storm may lower humidity level to the teens.

“Most of the time around here the humidity level is 50 percent,” Rogers said. “But once you start getting below 35 to 25 percent, we get to critical stages.”

Drought season in western North Carolina occurs from October to December, and February through April.
