Richard "Dick" Liebe

Richard "Dick" Liebe, of Brevard, passed away Oct. 18, 2016, in Asheville.

He was born May 26, 1932, in Norwalk, Conn., and raised in Killingworth, Conn. He graduated from Bates College, in Lewiston, Maine, in 1954 and served in the United States Army 1955-1957. He received a MA from the University of Houston and a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa.

He obtained his first teaching job at the College of Wooster from 1961–1967. He then taught geology at the State University of New York, in Brockport, N.Y., for more than 30 years. He loved to teach anyone who would listen and was honored with a Distinguished Teacher Award in 1973.

He retired from teaching in 1997 and spent his later years enjoying Hiking and traveling. He and his wife, Janice, lived in Tucson, Ariz., during the winter months and at Keuka Lake, in Hammondsport, N.Y., in the summer and fall.

He was an avid sports fan, especially of his favorite Yankees, often to his family's chagrin. He was an amazing card player, who was regularly beating his family at bridge up until the time of his death.

He had a big presence in this world, with a booming voice and unstoppable sense of humor that won't soon be forgotten.

His parents, Milton and Elizabeth Liebe, predeceased him.

He is survived by his loving wife and partner of 61 years, Janice; their three children, William (Glenn Anne), of Nashville, Tenn., John (Sue), of Brockport, N.Y. and Diane (Kyle), of Granger, Wash .; and his six grandsons, Reuben, Kevin, Douglas, Brian, Eric and George.

A ceremony of celebration was held Oct. 22, 2016, at 2 p.m. at College Walk in Brevard.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Finger Lakes Trail Conference, 6111 Visitor Center Road, Mt. Morris, NY, 14510; First Presbyterian Church of Penn Yan, NY, 311 Main Street, Penn Yan, NY 14527; and/or Sharing House, P.O. Box 958, Brevard NC 28712.
