Last year's number for whitetail deer taken in the county was 191, and 68 of them were on public land and 123 on private land.

The history of the whitetail deer in Transylvania County may be one of the best stories never told. The whitetail deer has long been a food staple for people living in the area. The Cherokee who lived throughout what is now Transylvania County depended heavily on the deer for food, shelter and clothing.
