Ernani Roberto Silva

Ernani Roberto Silva, also known as Ernie Silva, 84, longtime Transylvania County resident, passed away Nov. 8, 2016, in San Dimas, Calif.

His wife, Ann Price Silva, predeceased him. His brother, Emilio Silva, also predeceased him.

He was a resident of the county for 41 years. He graduated from San Marcos University and worked as an electronics engineer at the Rosman NASA Tracking Station/Rosman Research Station.

He was married to his high school pen pal, Ann Silva, for 54 years. They corresponded with each other when they were in high school and dated when he served in the United States Air Force. They were married after his military service. After moving to several states, they settled in Brevard the early 1970s.

He worked as an electronics engineer, supporting the manned spaceflight program, from Alan Shepard’s and John Glenn’s first Mercury missions, through Gemini, the Apollo moon landings, Skylab, and the first several space shuttle missions.

He was awarded the Silver Snoopy Award by NASA for his efforts. He was eager to help mentor new and young engineers in his field.

He is survived by his son, Ernie Silva, of La Verne, Calif .; his sisters, Esther Silva, Isabel Silva, Elena Reinoso and brothers, Guillermo Silva and Raul Silva, of Peru.

He lived with his wife and son in California, Maryland, then South Texas, before moving to Brevard in 1973. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He loved to garden in the yard with his wife. He also liked helping his neighbors with their home improvement projects.

He enjoyed going on Boy Scout outings with his son’s scout troop and enjoyed taking his grandson Hiking. He loved nature and the forests of North Carolina.

A Funeral Rosary and Mass were Nov. 21, 2016, with the presentation of colors for his service in the United States Air Force.

A remembrance mass will be scheduled in the future at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Brevard.

Burial of his ashes will be in St. Louis, Mo. beside his wife of 54 years, Ann Silva.
