Clara Guzik, Nathanial Velez and Ruth Sheehan help out Oct. 11 at the Anchor Baptist Church's warehouse, where food and other supplies were being taken to Lumberton, N.C., which had suffered from devastating flooding.


•Based on grade level proficiency, Transylvania County Schools ranked 13th out of the state's 115 school districts for the 2015-16 school year. The county schools ranked 16th the previous year.

The rankings are based on student proficiency scores on all end-of-grade and end-of-course tests taken by students in grades three through 12.

It does not, however, include any statistical data from K-2 classes, CTE (career and technical education) post-assessments and the ACT, a college entrance exam given to all high school juniors.
