Death Penalty Short Sighted

As someone who has defended in a death penalty trial, I believe that the apparently universal joy in the imposition of the death penalty on Dylann Roof is misplaced.

That result was foreordained when the trial judge, as he was required to, allowed the defendant to represent himself in the penalty phase of the trial. Roof’s defense team, one of whom may be the leading death penalty lawyer in the country, was not available to point out the inevitable result of putting Roof to death would be to have his framed picture beneath the swastika in every racist clubhouse in the country.
