Debate, Not Call Names

A Jan. 9 letter-writer invokes the often-heard claim that “97 percent of scientists studying climate change agree that climate warming trends over the past century are extremely likely due to human activities.”

First of all, scientific conclusions are arrived at through proof, not polling. I’m sure that at one point in history, 97 percent of scientists believed that the earth was flat. That didn’t make it so.

Furthermore, “extremely likely” is conjecture, not proof. And the trends of a mere “past century” are meaningless when you consider that the earth’s climate has bee...
