Methane (CH4) occurs naturally. This byproduct of digestion and decomposition is also, by far, the major component of natural gas. After carbon dioxide (CO2), methane is the second most prevalent greenhouse gas emitted in the U.S. from human activities. Methane’s lifetime in the atmosphere is much shorter than CO2 but it is more efficient at trapping radiation than CO2. Pound for pound, the comparative impact of methane on climate change is more than 25 times greater than CO2 over a 100-year period.
