Edwards' Bill Seeks To Tackle Unfunded Retiree Benefits – Brevard NC

In a recent Associated Press story, N.C. Sen. Andy Wells, a Catawba County Republican and co-chairman of the Senate pensions and benefits committee, said unfunded retiree benefit obligations for state employees was "the biggest issue facing the taxpayers of North Carolina."

A 10-year projection initially keeps annual payments mostly static, then they will rise in the early 2020s, reaching $683 million in 2026. North Carolina pays for health care costs after a retiree incurs them. It doesn't fund them ahead of time while the retiree is working.
