The Transylvania Times -

Awesome Brevard Students

March 13, 2017

As curator of the WNC Military History Museum in Brevard, myself and our board have been so impressed by the wonderful students and staff members we have encountered. As we visit area schools to impart the importance of military history, it is so gratifying to see the wonder and delight on the faces of the students.

On March 9, Dr. Hammond and Ms. Green, dedicated history instructors from Brevard Middle School, along with their principal, Mr. Bailey, invited me to speak to history classes on the United States entering WWI I. I was joined by Mike DiRocco, a Green Beret hero, and board member from Brevard. The students loved his interesting stories, as well as my explanations about artifacts, helmets, medals, etc. All students were so appreciative, and the knowledge they acquired will remain with them always.

My wife and I were also invited to Pisgah Forest Elementary by music instructor, Ms. Smith and her principal, Ms. Treadway, to share in their Veteran’s Day celebration in November. I lectured a little on the importance of the day, my wife wrote a special Veteran’s Day poem for the students, and I led the students in singing “Happy Birthday” to the Marines Corps. The audience then enjoyed the choral students singing patriotic songs and various pupils honoring their family members who serve and have served us so honorably.

In addition, the Marine Corps Junior ROTC from Brevard and Rosman High Schools, instructed by Lt. Col. Chuck Megown and Sgt. Maj. Tom Hall, are first class cadets who have been presenting the colors for us for each exhibit and opening. We salute these students and are so grateful for this phenomenal program. How lucky we are to have such amazing students and devoted staff members in our schools.

The WNC Military History Museum thoroughly enjoys the educational aspect involving our museum, and we are available to all schools in Transylvania County, Henderson County, and Buncombe County to further the students’ love of country and military history.
