Last week the Transylvania County Board of Education decided to add another $250,000 to its request for local funding from the county commissioners. The request was made to cover the possibility that the school system will have to hire additional teachers in order to meet an unfunded state mandate reducing class size in kindergarten through third grade.

Last year the North Carolina General Assembly passed legislation to be implemented this coming fall that would decrease the maximum class size in K-3 classes from 24 students to 19 to 21 students, depending upon the grade. Since no addition...
