One of my most memorable teachers was Helen Hall: Ms. Hall was my seventh-grade teacher at Lenoir Junior High School.

She was the most intelligent teacher I had ever met, the teacher who introduced me to Victor Hugo’s “Les Miserables,” to the romantic poets, and to George Orwell’s “Animal Farm.” Ms. Hall was the first teacher who challenged me to think for myself and taught me to write a good essay. Helen Hall was also the first African American individual I ever had the opportunity to know.
