Warning Issued After Panthertown Bear Encounter

The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) is recommending that visitors avoid camping in Panthertown Valley until June 1 because of reports of encounters with black bears.

Panthertown Valley is designated by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission as part of the Panthertown-Bonas Defeat Bear Sanctuary, meaning black bears are protected in that area.

During this time of the year, black bears are hungry after a long winter and have, unfortunately, learned to associate humans with food, according to USFS spokesperson Cathy Dowd.
