Recently my wife and I decided to return from Asheville on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The trip took about an hour-and-a-half, twice the time it would have taken on Route 280. But it was a very clear day with blue skies and fluffy white clouds. Opportunities like this just don’t come along every day.

When we started our climb, the trees were green and in full bloom. At the first lookouts we could view Asheville clearly. But as we drove higher Asheville disappeared, the trees became a chartreuse green and we saw four mountain ridges, one after another in the distance. We were viewing...
