The Transylvania County Library's Hidden Treasure - Brevard, NC

May 22, 2017

Most patrons who visit the Transylvania County Library are aware of the various services and programs that are available there. It’s not just about the books — except in the case of The Second Story Book Store, where it is all about books.

“We think our book store is a bit of a hidden treasure,” said John Gabcik, who is on the Friends of the Library (FOL) board and manages the book store. “A lot of people who come into the library – locals and visitors alike – are unaware that there is a book store right on site.”

Sponsored by the Friends and manned by volunteers, the bookstore sells books covering a wide range of topics at greatly discounted prices, including a nice selection of children’s books. DVDs are also available.

“So, along with browsing through the library’s book collection or accessing their other services, individuals can also do a little shopping,” Gabcik said. “Best of all, the money generated by book sales supports the many programs and events offered by the Transylvania County Library.”

Periodically, the Second Story Book Store also conducts a “Pop-Up Sale.” The next sale is Monday, June 26, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. All fiction books and DVDs will be on sale for $1.

The mission of the FOL is to enhance Transylvania County Library services by underwriting programs and events at the library – such as the upcoming popular summer concert series and the ongoing Bag Lunch Arts programs.

The book store is open Monday, Thursday and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The store can be accessed by stairs or an elevator, both of which are located near the library’s main circulation desk.

The FOL also sells books online through its Friends Amazon Storefront. Individuals can visit the library to get more information about the book store and online sales or by visiting the library’s website at http://www.library.transylvaniacounty.org.
