Even at the age of five, Phil Borgia was ready to box.

It had become hard to reconcile Phil Borgia's experiences in the Vietnam War with the boredom and routine that followed.

When he returned home to the Astoria section of Queens, N.Y., he sank into the monotony of going to work, coming home, drinking a beer, smoking a joint with friends and playing chess.

But something didn't feel right about it, and the quiet felt more empty than calm.

He had watched friends die in loud chaos, unlike the environment to which he had returned, where nothing felt the same.

He had almost died several times when his Army base camp was blown up on the morning...
