Outdoor Destination: White Owl Falls

This week's outdoor destination is White Owl Falls on the Thompson River. The Thompson River empties out of Nantahala National Forest before dropping into Lake Joccassee in South Carolina, and White Owl falls is the first large waterfall on the river, just off NC 281 past the main entrance to Gorges State Park.

Only about a quarter mile from the road, this 15-foot high waterfall is not the easiest to get to, and while the trail is a little steeper than some of the other destination hikes, waterfall chasers will be rewarded with a secluded pool at the bottom and less chance for crowds than...
