Katey French and Markos enjoy a book together on the lawn of Western Carolina Community Action.

United Way of Transylvania County (UWTC) and community partners will host an Early Childhood New Book Shower Saturday, July 29, from 11 a.m-2 p.m., at the Transylvania County Library.

Volunteers will give a bag of new books to up to 300 children ages 0-5 during Family Splash Day at the library. The book bags will also contain tips for reading with children and other educational tools.

"United Way board members and our other volunteers feel very strongly about the importance of early childhood education, and we all know that includes reading to children - starting at birth. We're looking for lots of community support to help bring this Early Childhood New Book Shower together," said Saunders Grommesh, resource development director for UWTC.

Partners collaborating to present the Early Childhood New Book Shower include Dollar Tree of Brevard, Friends of the Library, Highland Books, PNC Bank, The Family Place, Transylvania County Library, Transylvania County Recreation Department and United Way of Transylvania County.

Highland Books, located in College Plaza, has designated a special table of books suggested for children ages 0-5. The shop also offers 10 percent off any regular-priced book purchased for the shop's Early Childhood Book Shower donation box through July 26. Each book shower bag will also include a special Highland Books bookmark.

Dollar Tree of Brevard has placed a box of books suggested for children ages 0-5 at each register. Shoppers can purchase books and have them placed directly into the donation bin there through July 26.

PNC Bank has donated PNC "Grow Up Great" tote bags and Sesame Street themed Early Childhood Education booklets and CDs for each book shower recipient.
