Staff and volunteers at the Brevard/Transylvania Chamber of Commerce are gearing up for the solar eclipse on Aug. 21. Pictured left to right on the front row are Kenese Cartwright, Emily Martin (holding Super Solar Safety Squirrel) and Kris Hadacek. On the back row are Clark Lovelace and Sally Burnett.

Communities in the zone of totality for the upcoming total solar eclipse on Aug. 21 will experience an amazing phenomenon: stars being visible overhead in the middle of the afternoon.

It's just one of the reasons avid eclipse watchers are focusing their attention on Transylvania County during the first total solar eclipse to cross the entire United States since 1918, according to a press release from the Transylvania County Tourism Development Authority (TDA).

Transylvania County is one of the few counties in North Carolina that is in the heralded "zone of totality" for the eclipse.
