Fatal Accident Leads To Prison Term

Celena Faith Barclay, of Brevard, was sentenced to 29 months in prison and 36 months of supervised probation after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

On Aug. 27, 2016, the then 34-year-old Earthshine Discovery Center employee was driving the center’s utility task vehicle (UTV) without permission, according to the Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office.

At some point, the UTV rolled over on a passenger, 71-year-old William Hobgood, and he died from injuries related to the accident.

Hobgood, a Chapel Hill resident, was one of the original architects of ARPANET, which led to the creation of the Internet.

Barclay entered her plea during the recent Superior Court term.

The following pleas were also heard during the term:

•Chandler Blake Mathis, of Brevard, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to discharge a weapon into an occupied property. Mathis was sentenced to 30 months in prison.

According to a news release from the Brevard Police Department, on Jan. 31, 2015, Brevard Police received a 911 call stating there was a disturbance at Balsam Crest Apartments involving gunshots with no injuries. The victims advised police that there were three males involved who were leaving the scene in a white passenger car and they were able to give the license plate number.

Mathis, who was 16 at the time, and two other teens were arrested in connection with the incident.

•Nicholas Blanton Ashworth, of Brevard, pleaded guilty to two counts of obtaining property by false pretense, forgery of an instrument, uttering forged endorsement and being an habitual felon. Ashworth was sentenced to 74 months in prison.

•Dayton Ray Rice, of Barnardsville, N.C., pleaded guilty to possession of stolen goods and was sentenced to 19 months in prison and 30 months supervised probation.

The Honorable Judges W. Robert Bell and Eric C. Morgan presided during the term.
