Master Gardener: It All Flows Downhill, Storm Water And Raingardens In Transylvania County - Brevard, NC

The garden outside the Community Service Building in downtown Brevard is doing quite well. Proper drainage techniques help the garden remain healthy during wet weather. A program on proper drainage will be held Aug. 8.

Transylvania County is the wettest county in North Carolina and one of the wettest east of the Rockies, with an average rainfall of 67 inches. As a result we have some fantastic waterfalls, but the volume of rain also causes drainage issues on our properties.

It is not just the total that is an issue but the intensity with which that rain falls. Often we will get intense thunderstorms with totals of over 3 inches in a very short period of time.
