Echoes Of The South Pacific

Papua New Guinea.

Those words conjure thoughts of the exotic South Pacific, of dense jungle, of a Third World people, perhaps even of scraggly bearded, tattooed descendants of head-hunters sporting strange body piercings and brandishing menacing spears.

A colorful, chaotic national election was held in Papua New Guinea last month. However, as the results rolled in, there were increasingly loud cries of foul from one particular district, cries claiming that hundreds, if not thousands, of ballots had simply disappeared, never to be counted.
