Smokey Bear Has Come A Long Way

Smokey Bear's 70th birthday was celebrated Saturday at the Cradle of Forestry.

A Japanese commander's stumble into a bed of cactus, leading to the creation of the national symbol for forest fire prevention, Smokey Bear, might sound to be a stretch, but it makes perfect sense when Bob Beanblossom tells the story.

Beanblossom, a volunteer caretaker with the Cradle of Forestry in Pisgah National Forest, began the Cradle of Forestry's 70th birthday celebration of Smokey Bear on Saturday by giving a presentation on the intricate history of the bear's origins.
