Dr. Carol "Tad" Hyde Johnson

Dr. Carol “Tad” Hyde Johnson passed away Dec. 23, 2016. He was 85.

He was the son of Bill and Nancy Wallis of Brevard. He was predeceased by his twin brothers, Rev. Robin Elliot Johnson and Rev. Allen Easley Johnson.

He is survived by his former wife, Susan Johnson; and his three children, William Johnson, Rebecca Johnson and Shannon Ames and her husband, Ben Ames; and their children, Isabel and Teddy Ames; and his long time companion, Jill Montgomery.

He began his career as a dentist in Brevard and went on to become a doctor of anesthesiology at Boston Children’s Hospital, where he was head of the department and participated in the hospital’s first pediatric open heart surgery. He also worked for many years at Cape Fear Memorial Hospital in Wilmington, N.C., and eventually ended his career working for a medical group servicing several hospitals along the coast of Maine. He eventually retired in Brunswick, Maine.

He was a proud graduate of Christ School in Arden and the University of the South, Sewanee, both institutions he loved dearly.

He was an avid reader and wonderful story teller and extremely proud of his southern heritage. He was well known for his sense of humor, kindness and an avid and ongoing thirst for knowledge. He also rowed competitively well into his 80s.

A brief committal service will be held at the Saint Paul’s in the Valley cemetery at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, 2017, for both family and friends. Rev. William Walker from St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Brevard will conduct the service.

The family asks that any memorial contributions be made to either Christ School (christschool.org) or The Alzheimer’s Association.
