Late in life, Freud made a radical shift in his thinking. Possibly from seeing the tragedy of World War I, Freud focused on two main elements in the mind’s internal struggle with itself: he saw dual “drives” —life, or eros, against death, or thanatos. Life against death. And yes, he saw ample evidence of suicidal, selfdestructive tendencies in mankind — both within individuals, and within and between societies.

Instead of electing a veteran legislator and a centrist, a woman experienced in the art of negotiation and compromise and superbly prepared for the hardest job on earth...
