Raising Wages Picnic Planned For Sept. 2 - Brevard, NC

August 24, 2017

The people of Transylvania County are invited to Raising Wages Labor Day Weekend Picnic to be held Sept. 2, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Silvermont Park.

Research polls show a majority of citizens in North Carolina support raising the minimum wage from the current $7.25 an hour. A bill introduced in the last N.C. legislative session would raise wages in rural North Carolina communities to $12 an hour by 2020. Workers earning this minimum wage, or even a bit higher, even those working full time, simply cannot put food on their tables and a roof over their heads without additional public or private assistance, according to a press release from the Living Wage Coalition.

The Living Wage Coalition of Transylvania County, the Transylvania NAACP and Just Economics are sponsors of the Labor Day Weekend Picnic, which will provide opportunities to learn more about the Raising Wages campaign and issues related to living wages. Participants can express ideas through art, listen to live traditional mountain music and eat a hot dog.

If rain prevents holding the picnic on Sept. 2, the event will be rescheduled for Sept. 9, same place and time.
