Discussion Focuses On French Broad River

Tom Adams said that in the 1870s the French Broad River was dredged 26 miles, starting within the Brevard city limits and heading downstream, to help barges with the transportation of logs and produce to Asheville and beyond.

The project was eventually abandoned because of a lack of funding and some of the structures, including pilings from a dock, associated with the dredging have never been removed, and the section of river has never been returned to the way it was before, he said.

Adams said the changing of the river’s flow is one of “many reasons” there is occasional flooding....
