County A Billion Years In The Making

The Blue Ridge Escarpment begins in Georgia and goes up through Virginia.

A billion-year history of tumultuous topography can be credited for Transylvania County's landscape of steep slopes and lots of waterfalls, while its geological metamorphoses can also be blamed for the 80 to 100 inches of rainfall it gets annually.

"It's all connected," said Rick Wooten, senior geologist with the North Carolina Geological Survey. "Geology connects the weather, history, the mountains and the waterfalls.

"It's the bottom layer of the ecosystem that supports everything about it."
