Florida Resident Comes Home To Mom, Brevard, NC

When Kellie Otero of Homestead, Fla., heard about impending Hurricane Irma, she began planning her family’s trip to Brevard, where her mom, Barbara Wells, now lives.

At 40, she had lived through Hurricane Andrew in 1992, which killed 65 people, destroyed 63,000 homes and cost the area up to $27 billion in South Florida alone, hitting Miami as a Category 5 storm.

“It took everything,” Otero said. “I was 14 or 15, a sophomore in high school, and I had to be displaced. I went to another school in Illinois for a while, then I came to back to Florida and went to school in Coral Gables,...
