Lessons From Hurricanes

In addition to the lives lost and disrupted, the bill Americans will pay to recover from the devastation wreaked by hurricanes Harvey and Irma will register in the high billions. In order to mitigate the impact of such catastrophes in the future, there are several lessons we should learn.

1. Regulations matter. After Hurricane Andrew destroyed a small section of south Florida 25 years ago, that state revised its building codes so that new buildings would be more capable of sustaining such high winds.
