VFW Auxiliary members prepare for the event.

The partnership of VFW Auxiliary 4309, American Legion Auxiliary 88 and the Waightstill-Avery Chapter of the DAR resulted in an attendance of more than 430 veterans, their families and guests. One hundred and sixty-six veterans were pinned by either a family member, a representative of one of the three partnering organizations, or Command Sergeant Major Spencer and/or Master Sergeant Felder representing the United States of America, acknowledging their honorable military service "on behalf of a grateful nation,"

The families of Danny Tinsley, Milton Goldsmith, Reginald Lynch, Richard Snowdon, Lane Tilson, Weldon Merrill, Victor McCall and Verrill Stiles, who were killed in Vietnam and listed on the monument in front of the courthouse, were in attendance. Also attending were the family of Larry Jamerson of Rosman, who has been listed as "Missing in Action" since April 21, 1968.

Eleven guests from the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville staff and veterans came to the event, five of whom were Vietnam War veterans honored in the pinning ceremony.

There are many individuals to thank for making the event such a special day for our community Vietnam War/Era veterans; however, without the volunteers who stepped up and put the event together, it would not have become a reality. Volunteers with the VFW Auxiliary not previously mentioned are Frances and Danny McMahan, Dwight and Terena Flatt, Heather and Jeff Pickford, Sarah Whitmire, Sharon and Steve Powell, Derinda and Harry Powell, Cheryl Mouton, Brian, Sarah and Dakota McMahan, Brenda and Dwayne McMahan, Troy Evans, David Potter, Mike McNabb, brother and sister Elijah and Cora Eubanks, Joni and Ray Pavlik, Janice Holm, Christie Cochran, Peggy Johnson, Harriet Martino, Betty Hawthorne, Edith Sheehan, Eddie McMahan and George Poor.

Volunteers with the American Legion Auxiliary were Susan Jones and her newest grandbaby, Mylah Owen, Anne Morris, Lindy Owen, Pat Woody, Jackie Volrath, Tammy Snider, Betty Fletcher and State President Debbie Harris.

There were several special guests who offered their talents to entertain while lunch was enjoyed by all. They were Brian Walsh and the Sliding Rockers.

Lastly, Mayor Jimmy Harris, who is an Air Force Vietnam-era veteran, offered his remarks to honor his comrades in service and received a pin, and VFW State Commander Greg Stafford assisted carrying out the presentations to the families and veterans honored that day.
