'D-Day' Veteran Celebrates His 100th Birthday

John E. Williams is surrounded by his family, including his wife, Ruth, son Paul and daughter-in-law Laura.

John E. Williams celebrated his 100th birthday on Friday at Tore's Home in Brevard.

According to his 93-year-old wife, Ruth, to whom John has been married 71 years, John was born in Wakefield, Va.

He later came to Brevard and worked at the Ecusta plant after running Hilltop Grocery in Rosman. He retired from Ecusta in 1982.

"He's had a varied life. It's hard to tell you everything he's done," Ruth said.

For one, John was in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, landing on the Normandy beach at noon, June 6, 1944 during "D-Day."

The couple have two sons, Paul, 57, and John, 64...
